Transitions – by Barbara Cooper

2009 / Riveted brass and stainless-steel sheeting

Location: CTA Station: Paulina [Brown Line].
Commissioned under the CTA Arts-in-Transit program, where CTA stands for Chicago Transit Authority.

The CTA website describes..
Transitions comprises a suspended sculpture and a mosaic, which form an artistic dialogue.
“Transitions is intended to mirror the fluid, ephemeral, high-energy cellular neighborhoods of the city and the connections and intersections between them, which public transportation facilitates…[it] references not only passage to different physical places, but also to other states of being and points in time.”

Gravity is a force to be reckoned with – by Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle

2009

Structural steel, wood and mixed-media

12″ x 12″ x 30′

Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle’s project Gravity Is a Force to be Reckoned With, is based upon Mies van der Rohe’s uncompleted project, the House with Four Columns (1951), a square structure open to view on all four sides through glass walls. In Manglano-Ovalle’s work, the house is constructed at approximately half scale and inverted, the ceiling of the original becoming the sculpture’s floor, the floor becoming the ceiling, and all interior elements such as Mies-designed furniture and partition walls installed upside down.

Cast bronze

CTA Arts in Transit Program..

.

The CTA website  describes..
Abstract, dynamic and impeccably detailed, Landslide, like all of Derick Malkemus’ work, is a three-dimensional drawing — as significant for its lines as for its forms. Employing a unique visual vocabulary, the artist intends his work to be an expression through form, without narrative, to be appreciated without need for a verbal explanation.

Sculptural Benches – by Barry Hehemann

Over the span of 20 years from 1987 to 2007, Barry Hehemann has produced nine sculptural benches made of materials such as stone, concrete, steel, and stainless steel. These are examples of functional sculpture, and they encourage public to consider issues of comfort and stability as well the aesthetics of form.
