Spectral Liberation – by Christiane T. Martens

Installation: 1984 / Reinstalled: 2018

Stainless steel / 14 rainblow hued cancave arcs

Location: Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden

.

1984 Barry Hehemann

.

“Spectral Liberation” by Christiane Martens was fabricated by Vector and installed at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden in 1984 as a gift from David Belin. Belin commissioned the sculpture in memory of his wife Connie Belin, whose remarkably sunny disposition and rainbow “signature” were commemorated by the piece. In time, the sculpture had become a hallmark for the Botanical Garden and the surrounding city. When it was damaged in 2017 The Conservation Center hired Vector to re-make the damaged parts and refurbish the surface of the remaining components.

Sculpture “Healing Waters” – by Mark Davis, Maintenence by Vector Fabricating

2013 Healing Water – by Mark Davis

.

The work of Art does not end with  installation and dedication.  After all the ceremonies are over, begins the recurring work of maintenance!  Any piece of art requires periodic washing, cleaning, tightening of nuts & bolts, fixing of cracks and leaks, removal of rusts and dusts, sealing, waxing, coating.. and all the related activities, to keep a piece of art to it’s original form.

The sculpture “Healing Waters” by Mark Davis is located at the driveway of  Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital.  It was dedicated on Nov 15, 2012, [ click here…].. It’s maintenance is done by Vector Fabricating [ click here.. ]  Recently cleaning of accumulated dirt took place..

Statement by Vector

The restoration of Clement Meadmore’s sculpture “Spiral” was especially gratifying for several reasons. The artists that work at Vector and performed the restoration admire and respect the sculpture of Clement Meadmore. And Lippincott Inc., the company that originally fabricated the sculpture in 1971, was a model for the founders of Vector Custom Fabricating, Inc.. It was also interesting to work with a Corten fabrication and discover how it had weathered over 40 years outdoors.
