Seven Thousand Cords [After Beuys] by Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle is a contemporary response to Joseph Beuys’s renowned social sculpture/ecological project 7000 Oaks, composed of seven cords of wood as distinct sculptural elements. The above image shows Manglano-Ovalle’s sculpture, entitled “Seven Thousand Cords (after Beuys), 2014 – ongoing” exhibited in the north lawn of the Farnsworth House, Plano, IL. The piece incorporates wood from the Farnsworth House property.

The installation at Farnsworth House was part of “Architecture + Art: Inspiration Amplified”; a collaboration between the National Trust for Historic Preservation and United States Artists to create a public program for the Chicago Architecture Biennial. The program is the presentation of works by two United States Artists Fellows that have been inspired by the Farnsworth House and its landscape. The two artists are Mary Ellen Childs, a musical composer based in Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle, a sculptor based in Evanston, Illinois.

Ecotone – by Barbara Cooper

 Installed: 2013.

Location: Florida Gulf Coast University Library, Fort Meyers, Florida.

Wood, metal  / Approximate dimensions:  36’ long x 12’ high x 8’ long

Ecotone is a place where two different habitats meet.  While it has some of the characteristics of each bordering community, certain plant species not found in either appear.  The influence of the two bordering communities on each other is known as the “edge effect” and it is where much wildlife activity occurs. The library at the nexus of the university is a place where different areas of study meet, overlap, and generate new ideas and energies beyond the confines of the individual disciplines that it supports.

Keplies are 100-foot high horse-head sculptures by Andy Scott,  located within The Helix park, Falkirk, situated between Glasgow and Edinburgh, Scotland. Completed in 2014, these are the World’s Largest Equine Sculptures. Fabricated by SH Structures,

The sculpture is inspired by the cultural heritage of the Clydesdale horses, drought horses which worked hard to help people along the canals and on the land.

The 10-foot tall scale model of Kelpies, fabricated by Andy Scott, were temporarily exhibited  in theMuseum Campus,  Chicago, from October 2012 to August, 2013. It was part of The 23rd International Sculpture Conference [ISC] held in Chicago in October 2012.

From Chicago, the scale model of Kelpies were moved to the Purdue, North Central [PNC] campus, where they were exhibited till mid-March, as part of the PNC 15th Odyssey Sculpture Exhibition in 2013.

Vector team worked in the process of installation of Kelpies . These were also stored in Vector yard, till they were moved to PNC campus.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Having Vector fabricate this sculpture was a pleasure. They have a long history of turning out superior work, so I knew that MERIDIAN X would be in good hands. And was it ever! Two reasons prevail: they are consumate technicians; they have an artist’s grasp of what makes a work of art a work of art.

Maquette - Meridian X

Maquette – Meridian X.

.

In 2011, Ed McCullough contracted Vector to fabricate ‘Meridian X’.  Ed provided a small maquette (approx. 1:12 scale).  Mike Wilkie  engineered the structure;  Nathan Overley made the fabrication drawings and Erik Lowe was the lead fabricator in the shop. Installation was a joint effort on the part of Vector and Barry Tinsley (Sculpture Sources). Vector is particularly proud to have been part of ‘Meridian X’  because the sculpture is a culminating piece in an important series of works by an artist greatly admired and respected by the Vector team.
