ARTIST STATEMENT

Having Vector fabricate this sculpture was a pleasure. They have a long history of turning out superior work, so I knew that MERIDIAN X would be in good hands. And was it ever! Two reasons prevail: they are consumate technicians; they have an artist’s grasp of what makes a work of art a work of art.

.

In 2011, Ed McCullough contracted Vector to fabricate ‘Meridian X’.  Ed provided a small maquette (approx. 1:12 scale).  Mike Wilkie  engineered the structure;  Nathan Overley made the fabrication drawings and Erik Lowe was the lead fabricator in the shop. Installation was a joint effort on the part of Vector and Barry Tinsley (Sculpture Sources). Vector is particularly proud to have been part of ‘Meridian X’  because the sculpture is a culminating piece in an important series of works by an artist greatly admired and respected by the Vector team.

The Mark Davis piece, entitled “Healing Waters,” is a suspended sculpture, situated above the driveway entrance to Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago that represents the flowing movement of water. Comprised of painted blue and green steel and carbon fiber molded plates with a rim of LED lights, these virtual waves are meant to evoke the calming effect of water, and share its positive energy with all who enter the hospital.

Artist Statement:

The installation I have created for TURF consists of two parts. In front is a steel sculpture titled “The Road Ahead Leaves a Trail Behind.” Behind and around this is an assemblage of found fuel tanks from tractors, trucks, cars, homes, and other machines not identified. The “Road Ahead…” is typical of my work using the image of trucks as a starting point. The idea for the assemblage of tanks grew out of two truck sculptures I made earlier using real trucks carrying found objects, “Conversion” and “Galatea.” In all cases, my primary objective is to create something of visual beauty that is unique and stimulating. Once my composition is complete, I invest the viewer with the responsibility for interpretation, if interpretation is needed.

Vector has collaborated with many sculptors in fulfilling their unique artistic vision.  Like, in  the making of sculpture, “The Road Ahead” by  John Himmelfarb ; many of the processes of fabricating the sculpture were carried out the Vector  shop at Fulton, Chicago.

CTA: Morgan Station

City of Chicago Public Art Collection

Unique to the collection of artwork across CTA’s system are the artist-designed bicycle racks by Chicago sculptors Joshua Height, Derick Malkemus and Lacey Pipher at the Morgan Station. Fabricated of stainless steel, the lyrical sculptures provide a functional service to the transit station and the Fulton Market District community. The bicycle racks blend seamlessly with the design and aesthetics of the contemporary steel and glass station-house designed by the Chicago firm of Carol Ross Barney Architects..
